E. Complex Factors that Affect Pediatric Diagnoses:
Part I - Metabolic Implications
Part II - Navigating Listening Programs for Best Outcome

Presented by Nancy Lawton-Shirley, OTR/L
Friday, February 16, 2018
6 contact hours

Intermediate to Advanced level
Audience: Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, interested others

This session will also be available for online distance learning**

Part I - Metabolic Implications Description
Did you know a child’s milk allergy or digestive issue can be the root of his/her inability to be calm and self regulated?  What does it mean to sensory processing and motor coordination when children have allergies, yeast issues, problems with detoxification, or digestive issues?  When a child has allergies to many foods:   what does that mean for therapeutic outcomes?  There are so many special diets out there!!!—where can a parent turn for guidance?

As a speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist or teacher, we cannot diagnosis these challenges, but having an understanding that these issues can impact what we are doing in our profession is important.   An overview of common current health issues children and adults are having will shed light on links to potential sensory motor and cognitive challenges. Recent research and solutions will be discussed.

Objectives: following the session, participants will be able to
1.     Discuss health issues that can increase symptoms of sensory defensiveness.
2.     Identify 4 common health challenges that children can be experiencing that influence sensory motor and cognitive skills.
3.     Describe what is behind some of the special diets children are on.
4.     Explain how this information applies to pediatric practice.

Attend Part I only online for $105 (3 contact hours).**

Part II - Navigating Listening Programs for Best Outcomes
Have you noticed how many options there are for listening/music protocols? The major programs now available will be discussed with attention paid to similarities and differences, history, research, and therapeutic aspects.  Therapeutic Listening, Berard Auditory Integration Training, Rhythmic Entrainment, Tomatis, Listening Program will be discussed in the context of clinical reasoning that can be applied to each to support appropriate selection of a specific music program for the therapeutic needs of the client.

Objectives: following the session, participants will be able to
  1. List 4 main options for listening protocols.
  2. Identify benefits and therapeutic aspects of each.
  3. Apply clinical reasoning in selecting which program is best suited for the clients targeted therapeutic outcomes.
Attend Part II only online for $105 (3 contact hours).**
