Did you know?
This session is about the musculoskeletal function and treatment of the respiratory system. Basic anatomy and development of the rib cage/chest will be reviewed. Typical and atypical breathing patterns will be explained along with a musculoskeletal assessment. Treatment techniques to assist in the remediation of atypical breathing patterns will be addressed. Several taping techniques to assist the musculoskeletal system will be reviewed.

There will be a pre-course study packet for each participant to complete prior to attending.

Objectives: Participants will be able to: 
  1. Describe basic anatomy of the respiratory system.
  2. Explain the musculoskeletal development of the rib cage.
  3. Identify a typical and at least two atypical breathing patterns.
  4. Identify musculoskeletal issues related to the rib cage/respiratory system.
  5. Design and implement a musculoskeletal treatment plan for atypical breathing.

10:15  Assessment of the musculature impacting the respiration (lecture and lab)

Deanna M. Wanzek, PT, PCS, CKTI, CLT, is a graduate of the Mayo Foundation School of Physical Therapy. She has specialized in pediatrics for the past thirty years utilizing a holistic approach to evaluation and treatment. She incorporates myofascial release, craniosacral therapy, muscle energy and other complementary skills. She is certified in the use of Universal Exercise Unit/TheraSuit Method. She teaches in the Pediatrics course at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. She is recognized by the Kinesio Taping Association as a Certified Instructor and was named Instructor of the Year for 2007. DeDe is also a Certified Lymphatic Therapist. She is an APTA board certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist.
