G. Intensive Episodic Therapy and Lifetime Strategies for Children with Cerebral Palsy

Presented by Lauren Miller Beeler, PT, DPT, PCS, C/NDT

February 22, 2014
6 contact hours
Intermediate Level
This course will provide occupational and physical therapists with evidence based information and strategies to improve care and quality of life for children with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive, heterogeneous, lifespan disability that requires individualized, proactive planning, and management to address changes that occur with growth and changes in social roles through the years. Course participants will gain an appreciation of how the changing background of a lifespan perspective influences decision making and goal setting for pediatric therapists. Recent research provides support for restructuring service delivery models for individuals with cerebral palsy to address their complex multi-faceted needs as well as promote health and reduce development of secondary conditions. A growing body of evidence suggests that periodic, intensive, episodes of care, combining activity based interventions with healthy lifestyle choices can optimize abilities and promote participation for people with cerebral palsy.

This course blends current evidence with clinical expertise and family values to promote functional activities and participation for children with cerebral palsy. Although the course focuses specifically on individuals with cerebral palsy the concepts can be applied to other non-progressive neuromotor disabilities.

Objectives:  Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe and discuss the natural progression of participation restrictions, activity limitations, and impairments through the lifespan for individuals with cerebral palsy.
  2. Outline lifestyle choices which promote health and enhance quality of life for children with cerebral palsy as they age.
  3. Explain the rationale for task specific training as related to habilitation and optimizing health and wellness for people with cerebral palsy.
  4. Describe and discuss rationale for activity based interventions and interventions intensity.
  5. Develop and discuss discipline specific goals appropriate to children of all ages who have differing strengths and abilities.
  6. Identify critical ingredients for effective intervention for individuals with cerebral palsy.
  7. Recognize significant periods or indicators for intensive episodic care.
