Learn more about Sensory Diets
Picture
When done well, a sensory diet can change lives!

A sensory diet is an occupational therapy intervention strategy originated by Patricia Wilbarger.  Wilbarger & Wilbarger's (2000) comprehensive approach to treating sensory defensiveness includes education and awareness, a sensory diet, and other professional treatment techniques.  In this course, you will learn how to establish power in the sensory diet. Through customization, the sensory diet takes on new dimensions that can address sensory defensiveness, arousal and modulation difficulties, and also extend to incorporate sensory social routines to integrate co-regulation into the daily programming.  Learn to identify postural, autonomic, and affective issues that should be addressed within the context of the sensory diet. Using case examples from children with Autism and Fragile X Syndrome, you will learn the power of matching the sensory diet to the child’s specific needs.

Objectives: Participants will be able to
  1. Describe the sensory diet as a component of a comprehensive treatment approach including education and awareness, a sensory diet, and other professional treatment techniques.
  2. Identify specific symptoms of sensory defensiveness as well as other common disruptions, such as postural, autonomic, and self-regulation and how to customize the sensory diet to address these issues.
  3. Maximize power and match a range of difficulties to the appropriate timing and activity selection when devising sensory diets.

Tracy Murnan Stackhouse, a Colorado native, is president and co-founder of Developmental FX. She is a leading pediatric occupational therapist (OT) involved in clinical treatment, research, mentoring, and training regarding OT intervention for persons with neurodevelopmental disorders, especially Fragile X Syndrome and autism. She received her undergraduate degree in occupational therapy from Colorado State University and a a master’s degree in developmental psychology from the University of Denver. She received her NDT training with Lois Bly. She is SIPT Certified (Sensory Integration and Praxis Test). and was the clinical specialist in sensory integration at The Children’s Hospital in Denver as well as the OT for the Fragile X Research and Treatment Center. Tracy continued her clinical and research work with Dr. Randi Hagerman at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute during its start-up year. Tracy has written several book chapters on sensory integration and neurodevelopmental disorders, and teaches and consults nationally and internationally on sensory integration, Fragile X and related topics. Tracy and her husband have two wonderful children. You can visit Tracy at the Developmental FX website.
