A. Exploring Sensory Integration:
From Then to Now to When and How

Presented by Patricia Wilbarger, MEd, OT, FAOTA and
Patricia Oetter, MA, OTR/L, FAOTA

February 23, 2017
Distance learning: Watch live or save for later**
6 contact hours
Introductory - Advanced Levels
Audience: Occupational and Physical Therapists
This course is designed for OT’s and PTs who are using current neurologically & developmentally based interventions.  The evolution of SI theory and practice and the art and science that has contributed to its development will be discussed.

The instructors for this course have a long history and personal interaction with the development of sensory integration theory and treatment. As a friend, peer, and colleague of A. Jean Ayres, Patricia Wilbarger has a rare and intimate knowledge of Ayres' work, research and theories of function and dysfunction. She is also responsible for expanding Ayres' theory and treatment principles leading to refined, discreet treatment for sensory defensiveness. Ms Wilbarger established the Camp Avanti model based on SI theory and recruited Patricia Oetter to design and carry out therapeutic programming at Camp. Ms Oetter has her own history expanding SI theory, developing an intensive treatment model based on Camp Avanti and the MORE treatment model.

New scientifically based theories with well established theories and practice will also be integrated into the discussion.  Identifying core issues and developmental outcomes will lead to clinical reasoning for treatment planning that focuses on the most important factors to address first, second and third. The use of lecture, slides/videos, challenging cases, activities and group discussion will be the format for the day.

Online viewing option available. Viewers will receive a certificate documenting the number of contact hours; however AOTA CEUs are not available for this option.

Objectives: following the session, participants will be able to
  1. Describe the early development of SI theory and practice
  2. Identify 4 major things to consider during assessment & treatment planning.
  3. Describe therapeutic use of self as it relates to the art of therapy.
